Multi-lingual Contact Database
An organisation bringing together people from
various countries in Europe, with their own native languages, has a
large contact database of people all over the world. This database,
in addition to having the usual contact information, also has very
detailed information on the interests of the contacts. The database
now runs in a DOS environment on a Novel network and is used by a
variety of users. The database has screens that appear in the native
or chosen language of the user. The client is able to add additional
screens in different languages for users speaking new languages as
they join the business. Therefore an additional programme was
written to enable translators to work through the various screen
commands and translate them as appropriate into the new languages.
In addition this software was required to communicate with their own
preferred word-processor package, it prepares mail-merge files and
all associated labelling and record keeping. The software is
maintained by remote link over the telephone line without the need
for the programmer to visit the client who is based in another
European country.

To enable the detailed management of projects in a
multi-consultant practice, a windows based package using Microsoft
Access has been developed which will enable export of information
for reports and detailed monitoring of the progress of each project.
In addition, the time and billing information retained within this
programme allows subsequent analysis of individual projects to
inform the proposal and costing process. The windows environment
permits very attractive and lively screens with on-screen help to
enable the less experienced use the package with maximum benefit.
